Video games debates are not something that we haven’t seen, but the fact that we keep reading about it proves that it is actually something that is worth paying attention to. When it comes to kids, opinions can variate a lot; nonetheless, is healthy to recognize that everything can be somehow harmful at a certain point. That’s what we’re going to be talking about, should your child put aside video games to go play outside?
Childhood is a crucial phase. The different experiences a kid has at his short age can determinate who they are going to be in the future; this means we should always pay attention to what they do, as well as making sure they are developing a healthy character.
Last year, the WHO (World Health Organization) officially included the addiction to video games among the most harmful behaviors related to technology. After years of discussion, their opinion is pretty clear now: video games addiction is now considered a mental illness. This makes us see these games from a different perspective. They can be really funny and a great way to have a good time, but when playing them becomes an uncontrollable desire, that’s when it becomes a problem.
Nowadays, video games are everywhere, and children love to play them all the time. This is not a problem itself, at least not a first; kids love to have fun, and they are funny, so it is not hard to figure out why they love them so much. Problems come when a child spends too much time playing them, not because of the content (that’s a whole different topic), but because they may stop playing with other people. But why is this a problem?
Develop social skills is a crucial step in childhood. Interacting with other people as much as possible prepare individuals for their whole life and can make a great difference in their future, especially if they have autism or any condition within ASD (autistic spectrum disorder) since these kids tend to have difficulties when socializing with others. For kids, playing outside instead of staying indoors playing video games, can make a huge variation in their way to perceive the world.
Should you forbid the video games to your kid?
Of course not. As said before, they can be really funny and can influence positively the mood of any kid, and that’s a good thing. Also, they have other benefits such as increasing their reasoning speed, stimulate their concentration, developing their reflexes and mental agility as well as improve their manual coordination. Actually, some games are specially created with educational purposes, which can help a kid in other ways too.
The problems are not the video games itself; the actual problem is the addiction to them or what they can mean in a kid’s life. As long as it doesn’t become an evident problem, your child can perfectly have some hours of playing. Nonetheless, playing outside and interacting with others is even a better option, so we should constantly encourage them to do so. Friendly advice, if your son or daughter plays video games a lot, you can join him or her or bring friends to play along that way he or she will be improving social skills at the same time, not a bad idea at all.
